Chief Rival: Vinton-Shellsburg
Number of Returning Letterman: 14
Number of Returning Starters: Offense-6 Defense-5
Preview from Coach Goodchild and Zittergruen
Top Teams in District: Williamsburg should be the favored team in the district. I would think the Grinnell will be a close second. Solon will be a good team and should be able to compete at the upper level. South Tama brings back a large number of returning players. Fairfield will have a very good running back. With a new staff it is hard to determine how good they will be.
Our non-district will be very tough. We open with Vinton and that is our rival and has always been a good game. Marion and CCA are bringing back a number of good athletes and will be very solid teams. Mt. Vernon will be one of the top teams in 3A again.
Overall Thoughts: We have a challenging schedule. The competition will be very good. We play two 4A schools and one team that was in the State Championship. Solon, Marion, Williamsburg and Mt Vernon were play-off teams a year ago. Six of the nine teams we played had winning records.
We return All State lineman Carter Holmes, We have had a very good off season! We also have a talented group of incoming athletes that should make us better. Our athletes have worked very hard in the weightroom to help make us competitive! We lost a very talented group but returned some very talented athletes.

It’s been a busy week of getting back into activities for MS/HS students. Coach Z spent time positively engaging players during this team huddle at the MS camp this week.

Student Spotlight, Sandreana Lamer
Sandreana Lamer is a senior at Benton Community High School. Read on to find out more about her experiences taking college credit courses and how they have benefitted her...
When did you start taking college credit classes?
I started taking college classes my junior year
Which courses and/or academies have you enjoyed the most and why?
I enjoyed my Patient Care Academy class the most. It had three different classes involved. I enjoyed it because it is helped me further my education in a career path I’m interested in.
Who (Kirkwood instructor, staff, etc.) has made a lasting impact on you? Why?
The instructor that made the most impact on me was Brittney Langston. She taught me in my PCA class. She was always working hard to make sure everyone was prepared and keeping up with the workload and that we all enjoyed the class. We all got to know each other pretty well in the hours we spent together and she was very understanding to our schedules and to us as people.
What was the most surprising thing you learned taking college credit coursework?
The most surprising thing I learned was I didn’t know how to study. I had to learn what worked best for me and my friends and family were huge helps.
How do you feel taking college credit classes better prepares students for their futures?
Being in college classes now helped me learn things I didn’t know I needed, like how to study, before I get thrown into the college life. I appreciate being able to earn college credits in high school without having to be on a college campus because many classes are expensive to take when you are fully enrolled in college.
We commend Sandreana for her hard work and dedication, and wish her continued success in the years to come!
