At Benton Community School District, we ensure that all students receive the support they need to succeed. I have the privilege of being the K-6 ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and also as a reading and math interventionist.
As an ESL teacher, I work with students learning English as a second language. The goal is to help these students develop their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills so they can effectively communicate in social and academic language. I provide individualized and small-group instruction. Groups are determined by the language level of each student. I also work closely with classroom teachers and families to support students’ language development and academic success.
As one of the reading and math interventionists, I provide specialized instruction (based on summative assessments) to students whose scores show the need for extra support in literacy and/or mathematics. Lessons are targeted to skills shown to be below the benchmark. While teaching small groups, I use research-based strategies to help students close their gaps and reach grade-level expectations.
I love that my role involves fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students have the opportunity to grow and achieve by empowering students with the skills they need for future success.
