It’s microscope week in 6th grade! Students will begin learning how to use the compound microscope, identify its parts, and explore the microscope’s history. This will be a first experience in the microscopic world for some of our students!
Microscopes are an essential tool for students to learn because they provide hands-on experience that enhances both scientific understanding and critical thinking skills. We will use the microscope to explore various types of cells and microorganisms, giving students a firsthand look in a world that textbooks can only describe. This practical experience not only deepens their understanding of biology but also incorporates math and literacy. For example, students will measure and calculate magnification, requiring basic math skills, and they will interpret and write reports on their observations, fostering literacy development.
