It may be hard for a 3rd grader to imagine the world before GPS and Google Maps. Recently, students in Mrs. Brecht’s 3rd grade classroom had the opportunity to learn firsthand about using cardinal directions and map skills in Social Studies. Students were tasked with using what they have learned about cardinal directions to find nine clues hidden around Keystone Elementary.
As students found each clue, they had to use their comprehension and inferencing skills to help guide them to their next spot, while still being mindful of their inner compass. There was a definite buzz in the hallways as students achieved success. All the while they were working with their classmates, practicing the Character Strong focus of the month: Cooperation.
Like any good scavenger hunt, the end result was a prize, but only when students journeyed through a few more cross curricular activities in this experience. In collaborative groups, students retraced their steps on a map of the school, and found out that reading a map truly is a special skill. Students were then asked to write about their journey through the school, sharing what they learned and reflecting on their feelings about the lesson.
