One part of our third grade math curriculum is learning about fractions. We are currently in the process of learning how to recognize simple equivalent fractions and how to form simple equivalent fractions. We start the process by decomposing, or breaking apart, a fraction using number lines and number bonds. Then we begin by learning that when the numerator is the same, the greater number denominator is actually the smaller fraction. This helps us realize that as we make more “pieces,” each piece gets smaller. We then move on to comparing and ordering fractions using various numerators and denominators. One way we are able to visualize this is by using fraction strips. Fractions strips allow us to measure out two or more fractions and see the size correlation.
