Phonics is a fundamental component of early literacy. Through instruction, students connect sounds with letters, which helps develop their reading and writing skills. In KP, we have enjoyed adding some fun to our phonics! We have done this by having a wide range of interactive, collaborative, and hands-on activities that connect to the different learning styles of our students. Incorporating physical movement, visual aids, and collaboration has helped create an inclusive and more engaging learning environment. Activities we have used this year include Play-Dough letters, phonics tic-tac-toe, beginning sound bingo, write the room, kinetic sand letter writing, and many more. Cup stacking with CVC words is a new favorite.

These hands-on learning opportunities help enhance our literacy rotations. Students complete independent work and then can choose the materials or activities they want to interact with that day. Adding these interactive, fun activities to our daily phonics work creates an environment that builds confidence, allows for a deeper understanding of the skills they are practicing and helps develop excitement and ownership of their learning. Finding ways to make learning fun can motivate students and foster a lifelong love of learning.
