While reading various stories about dogs during our December reading unit, one of the students in our class talked a lot about her time and experiences volunteering at a local animal shelter. Her peers were intrigued and wanted to find a way to help out the animals. The students decided that they wanted to collect donations and the Cedar Valley Humane Society (CVHS) project was born!
The kids researched what the shelter needed and then split into marketing teams. Several students created posters to hang throughout the school, others created slides to be shown on the announcements each day, and another group of kids created a google slides presentation and presented information to the other 4th grade classrooms. Their hard work paid off, we collected over 60 items to donate to CVHS!
Benton Community graduate, Ken Ahlers, works as an ambassador for the Cedar Valley Humane Society. He came to visit our classroom and brought his rescue dog, Desi. Ken talked to us about what the shelter does, how to volunteer, how to interact with dogs and gave us time to ask questions.
This project taught 4H students a lot about marketing and helping others. They were so happy to help make the holidays a little brighter for the furry, four-legged friends at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
