Mrs. Frazier’s class is back in action after the Thanksgiving break. We are working hard to learn and understand what math is all about.
Memorizing the math facts certainly does help in the accuracy, fluency, and automaticity in which a student is able to complete math algorithms, however, math is more than just memorizing facts. Common Core math and current math standards are really focusing on the students’ abilities to manipulate numbers and understand the “what and why” behind the algorithms they are being taught.
Using objects and visuals, students are learning what addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division “look like”. The end goal being, not just that students can accurately complete a page of algorithms, but that they can have the conceptual understanding that it takes in order to successfully use and apply math concepts as an everyday life skill.
