It has become commonplace for science to take a backseat to reading and math. This is a disappointing reality in too many districts, K-6 schools, and classrooms. I remember colleagues at previous schools as far back as 2007, telling me they did not even open their FOSS science kits. They said they didn’t “have time” to teach science. Reading and math were too important.
The Grant Wood AEA does a phenomenal job of providing science units/kits to schools, teachers, and students. They spend a lot of time and money to ensure that teachers are equipped with what they need to conduct dynamic and memorable science investigations. For most kids, science learning is the highlight of their day. What we perceive as adults as not being “interesting” or “worth the effort”, is actually fun and beneficial for our students. We need to make the time to make this science learning happen for all of our students. I am thankful that we have teachers here at Benton Community who understand how important science education is. I am also glad we have students who eagerly await the next opportunity to dive into science.
