Students in Mr. Balvance’s class were given an interesting question, “What will happen to a plant that does not get any sunlight?” From here, students began thinking like scientists to perform an experiment. Mr. Balvance’s students created several identical situations where wheat seeds were planted in moist soil. The control sat in direct sunlight, while the experimental containers sat in a black, opaque bag where sunlight could not get to the plant.
After several days, they revealed the containers with back bags and were shocked to see that the wheat seeds still germinate and even grew, yet the lack of sunlight turned the leaves yellow! The class then had a conversation about photosynthesis and how plants absorb blue and red light rays from the sun for food. After this process, their leaves reflect green. Thankfully, after exposing the yellow leaves to sunlight, the leaves turned from yellow to green in mere hours.
Science rocks!
