Guest speakers are a great opportunity to learn. Some students at the MS/HS were able to listen to Justice May discuss the branches of government, how he was appointed as an Iowa Supreme Court Justice, and more.

Tomorrow’s Workforce Gains Valuable Experience Today -Courtesy of Jim Magdefrau- 11th Grade Student Hannah Greiner Participates In Internship at Virginia Gay Hospitals Benton Community partners with Kirkwood in order to provide job shadow and internship opportunities in our local area. Students can spend a day in a job shadow gaining insight into a wide variety of professions in order to see if the career may be a possible “fit” for the student. We have had students participate in a wide variety of career visit days as well as customized job shadows, and students have benefited from being able to see a “day in the life” of local professionals. We have also had students start with a job shadow and like it so much that the student ended up working for the organization that he or she job shadowed for. Junior Hannah Greiner recently participated in an internship experience with Virginia Gay Hospitals. Greiner states “I was fortunate enough to do an internship through WLC at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. The internship was a multi-department rotation which pretty much means I got to go everywhere in the hospital shadowing different departments and specialties. I was even able to observe different types of surgery! This internship was so helpful and I learned a lot about myself and my interests which is exactly what I was hoping for. The staff at Virginia Gay was truly amazing and I will always be grateful to them for being so welcoming and kind. My internship host at the hospital was very good about trying to get me everywhere I wanted to go. I love that I was able to get a head start on making connections and getting more experience being in a healthcare setting working with patients. This was a great start for me and I can't wait to do more job shadows/ internships in the future! I highly recommend trying out a job shadow or internship through WLC, it will be very beneficial!” Further information about the program can be found here: https://www.kirkwood.edu/workplace-learning-connection/job-shadows/index and a short youtube promotional video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECJwtr1e2j4. Please direct further questions related to the internship or job shadow experience to Aaron Cretin at the Middle School/High School.
