The American Dream is a concept that can be challenging for high school students to clearly identify and understand. In preparation for the American Dream unit, seniors in Senior English made two visits to the Keystone Care Center. During their first visit, students simply introduced themselves to the residents and got to know them. At the second visit, students were asking more in depth questions about the lives of the residents, what they valued, and their viewpoint of the American Dream. These visits provided students with firsthand accounts and real world experiences from residents that have incredible life stories. While reflecting on the trips, one Benton senior remarked, “It’s a way to show our elders we still care and that they are important.” When asked if the trips should continue for future Senior English classes, the students responded with an adamant yes. Special thanks to Amy Sparks at the Keystone Care Center for helping make these visits possible and the residents for their time.
