Brylee Bastian, 1st Grade Teacher, Atkins Elementary
Introducing first-grade students to the wonders of space opens up a universe of possibilities for inspiring their young minds. At this early stage, students are naturally curious and eager to explore the world around them. Learning about space not only feeds their innate sense of wonder but also lays the groundwork for understanding complex scientific concepts later in their education!
Students have been grasping fundamental ideas about the Earth, the moon, the sun, and planets. This science unit aligns with our current literacy unit in the Benchmark Advance curriculum, focused on observing the sky. Being able to integrate the topic across multiple disciplines has encouraged students to use problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and their imagination.
