One of the joys of teaching is sharing the love of teaching with others. One way to share this love, is by helping other prospective teachers begin their career. Over the years Benton has built a positive relationship with students from the University of Northern Iowa. We have a wonderful partnership with UNI’s Student Teacher Coordinator for our region, Leasha Henricksen.
Student teaching allows college students (in the education field) to practice, improve, and hone their teaching skills. This process is done with the encouragement, guidance, and support of both a cooperating teacher (in the district the student teacher is placed), as well as the support from UNI’s student teacher coordinator.
Student teacher’s have the opportunity to practice teaching various subject areas, and eventually conduct whole lessons/days on their own (with a cooperating teacher close by for support). The goal of this process is to make sure student teachers successfully demonstrate the skills and knowledge to effectively teach on their own.
Atkins Elementary currently is hosting a student teacher in Mrs. Sonka’s second grade class. We are enjoying the knowledge, technology skills, and support she is offering to students. Ms. Abby Wahlert is nearing the end of her college education, and ready to begin her future as an educator. Benton Community is excited to provide this opportunity for future teachers!
