Students love when visitors come to our school, especially the Benton County Naturalists. The Benton County Naturalists have been coming to our school district for a lot of years and have always found a way to keep engaging our students with new science topics. They typically visit the Atkins building 3-4 times a school year.
Our theme in first grade right now is learning about hibernation and what animals do in the winter. In the beginning of January, the Benton County Naturalists read a story about hibernation to students and they learned some important vocabulary words such as hibernation, torpor, and migration. Then, students were able to “act” out as animals in what they do during the winter time. Students always enjoy this because they get to use props and make connections to what they’re learning. This is a great way for their new learning to stick and do something fun in the process. Thank you, Benton County Naturalists, for taking time out of your day to make learning fun for our students!
